================================================================= Rice University Computer and Information Technology Institute Information for Software Distribution Submissions (This file: INFO) ================================================================= CITI provides a centralized system for distributing software developed at Rice University, or at collaborating institutions, to potential licensees in the academic, commercial, and governmental communities. ================================================================= CATEGORIES OF SOFTWARE DISTRIBUTION Investigators can identify software for distribution by CITI in any of three categories: * Public domain (PD): Software can be freely copied, modified, and redistributed by anyone without obligation to authors or to Rice University. Distribution may be over national and international computer networks; CITI will provide copies on tape/disk for a nominal distribution fee. Authors receive no monetary compensation from Rice or CITI. Use of authors' and Rice's names in any redistribution of modified software is prohibited. (See the files LEGEND.PD and LICENSE for more details.) * Internal Use (IU): Software is licensed for the internal use of the licensee only. The licensee is not allowed to distribute copies of the software or modified versions of the software, without additional written approval from CITI. (See the file LICENSE for more details.) Copies of IU software can be obtained only by submitting a signed license (in the file LICENSE) to CITI together with a one-time license fee. The IU category includes two subcategories, IU1 and IU2. The license fee for IU1 software is comparatively small, to cover the cost of shipping, handling, and administrative expenses. The license fee for IU2 software may be more than a nominal fee; authors and/or their institutions receive a portion of IU2 license fees over and above the amount of the IU1 license fee. * Commercial Development (CM): Software is licensed for com- mercial development on a case by case basis; authors receive a portion of such license fees. [CM distribution is not yet fully implemented at this writing] ================================================================= STEPS FOR SUBMITTING SOFTWARE FOR CITI DISTRIBUTION 1. The form in the on-line file SUBMIT should be filled out and sent to CITI. This form asks a number of questions about the software, the contributors, and the likely target markets for the software. For assistance in completing the form call (713) 527-6077 or send email to sdc@cs.rice.edu. * PD and IU1 software forms can be submitted via EMAIL. A hard copy of the form must be signed by at least the person completing the form (in the case of multiple developers, more signatures are preferred, but not required). Hard copies of the IU2 and CM software forms must be signed by each of the listed developers before the software can be included in the catalogue. (CITI's software email address: sdc@cs.rice.edu). 2. CITI will assign a tentative catalog number to the software and notify you via EMAIL. 3. Appropriate copyright legends should be added to the software and documentation. See the files LEGEND.PD, LEGEND.IU, and LEGEND.COP for details. 4. When CITI has reviewed the signed and completed SUBMIT form, the software will be added to CITI's on-line catalog. CITI re- serves the right to screen software for inclusion in the catalog. =================================================================
